Dog Skin Problems

Dog Skin Problems

Just like humans, dogs can have problems with their skin. Some of these skin problems can be treated at home while others may need to be monitored by a veterinarian. If you live in or around Medford, NY, and your pet is experiencing skin issues, schedule an appointment with Dr. Dave at Veterinary Outpatient Treatment Center.

Rashes

A rash can form anywhere on a dog's body, but it is most common to see it on the stomach. Several problems can cause these rashes, so it can be difficult to determine the exact cause. Insect bites can cause them as well as various types of allergies. It may also be contact dermatitis. With this cause, something irritating comes into contact with your dog's skin. This may be an irritant like fertilizer or poison ivy. It may also be various lawn chemicals. If you suspect that your dog has contact dermatitis, wash the area with the rash to get rid of anything that may still be on the skin.

Red Spots

If you see red spots on your dog's stomach, especially during the late spring and into summer, it may be caused by bites from a black fly. This causes flat spots that don't tend to irritate dogs, and they don't generally require treatment. These spots usually come on suddenly, and there may be several of them all at once. These spots will go away eventually by themselves.

Scabs

Scabs may appear on your dog for several different reasons. It may be puppy impetigo, a skin infection that most often strikes puppies because of their immature skin. It may also be ectoparasites. Fleas and mites can bite the skin and cause irritation and open wounds that eventually scab over. It may also be pyoderma, another type of skin infection. Depending on the cause of the scabs, your dog may need anything ranging from a bath to skin treatment from a veterinarian.
